A Letter from the Mayor
Welcome:
On behalf of the citizens of Breckenridge, I am delighted to welcome you to our Town and the Backstage Theatre. One of the things that sets Breckenridge apart is our commitment to the arts, as evidenced by our Arts District. I applaud your choice to see a show by the Backstage Theatre and hope you’ll take some time to explore the many other cultural experiences Breckenridge has in store for you. The Barney Ford House and Museum is only one block to the south, and the Edwin Carter Museum is one block to the north – or perhaps you’d like to take in a concert by the Breckenridge Music Festival or the National Repertory Orchestra at the Riverwalk Center.
While you’re in Breckenridge, I hope you will also have the chance to enjoy the many things that our community and the surrounding area have to offer, including fine dining, a variety of stores, and spectacular Rocky Mountain hiking, biking and sightseeing. And don’t forget about the Recreation Center, the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, Breckenridge Nordic Center, Breckenridge Golf Course, and the incredible skiing and snowboarding at Breckenridge Ski Resort.
The Town of Breckenridge and the Backstage Theatre thank you for your support and we hope to provide you with an experience that will bring you back to Breckenridge time and time again.
Sincerely,
Ernie Blake, Mayor
A Letter from the Board President
My Fellow Patrons,
Welcome to Backstage Theatre's 34th season. On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, community, and
talent both onstage and behind the scenes, I’m honored you’ve chosen us to amuse, enlighten, and sometimes
challenge you.
Our Artistic Director Chris Willard was named Best Director at 2007's Colorado Community Theatre Coalition
Festival and also garnered Best Set Design. Under his direction, Murphy Funkhouser took the Best Actress
award for "Crazy Bag". Denver newspapers put our production of "Smell of the Kill" on last summer’s "must see"
theater list. I’m very excited about this year's ambitious and varied season Chris has planned for us.
However, these glories don’t happen out of thin air. They must be financed and ticket sales make up less
than half of revenues. Donors, sponsors, advertisers, and grants are the Backstage’s financial lifeblood.
Facilitating another way for our "angels" to help us, we’ve started a portfolio account in the Backstage
Theatre's name. Now you can donate stock, as well as cash, goods, services, and time. You may be able to
avoid capital gains taxes as well as claim the deduction for the charitable contribution.
Maybe you have more time than money to offer. We're always looking for volunteers. Talk with us about
helping at the box office, building or breaking down sets, grant writing, organizing storage and running
trash to the dump, serving on the Board of Directors, or putting up posters. There's a myriad of ways to
earn free show tickets and our gratitude.
Thank you, Town of Breckenridge, for our lovely home, the Breckenridge Theatre. Thank you volunteers and
benefactors for support and dedication in keeping the tradition alive.
And thank you, our audiences, for your applause, laughter and tears.
Enjoy,
Phil Kopp
President, Backstage Theatre
A Letter from the Artistic Director
Welcome to the 2007-2008 season of the Backstage Theatre!
As an artistic director, I have the enviable position of getting to tell some amazing stories and
working with some very talented people in the process of bringing these stories to life. The volunteers
and professionals who work in this theatre are some of the most dedicated, compassionate, and gifted
people I’ve had the pleasure to know. They make my job not only easier – but so very much more enjoyable.
I wanted to let them know in this forward how much we at the Backstage truly appreciate their time and
talents. Kudos to you all! We couldn’t make a stitch of this happen without you!
If you’re a returning audience member, you’re well aware of the quality shows we’ve presented in the
past (the emotionally powerful holocaust drama "Hidden" and the critically acclaimed children’s Theatre
production of "The Hobbit" to name just a few). If you’re new to the Backstage Theatre – welcome. Get
ready for a great theatrical experience. We look forward to you visiting us again and again.
For our 34th season, the Backstage is focusing on the power of comedy, bringing you a slate of shows
guaranteed to put a smile on your face, tickle your funny bone, and leave you rolling in the aisles.
(All the things you expect from a good comedy, yes?) Be sure to catch the irreverent "Cannibal The
Musical" (back after its sold-out run last Fall), the hilarious and poignant Over the River and Through
the Woods, and the hysterical odd-duck romance, "The Housekeeper". There are plenty of over-the-top
laughs and campy songs in "Reefer Madness", screwball hijinks courtesy of the Preston Sturges classic,
"Easy Living", the anarchic sidesplitting antics of "Two Dumb Dogs" (from the writer of "Hyronomous A.
Frog. The Frog Prince"), and a silly, musical paean to the Great Frozen North in "Guys on Ice".
If you haven’t done so already, please become a donor to the Backstage. Secure your theatre seats for
the season and be sure not to miss a single one of our fantastic shows. Donor forms are available in
your program and in our lobby. And please consider volunteering for the theatre – as an actor, designer,
stage manager, builder, costumer, technician, backstage helper. Whatever interests you’d love to explore.
Don’t just watch from the sidelines. Join our theatrical family and become a part of the action.
Thanks again for visiting the Backstage Theatre. Have a great time and enjoy the show!

Colorado Community Theater Coalition
Backstage Theatre has been involved with the Colorado Community Theatre Coalition (CCTC) on and off since 1991. CCTC is a group dedicated to the community theatre in the state. Each June, eight to twelve companies meet at a different location to attend classes, talk about theatre, and participate in a friendly competition with main stage productions.
Using rules established by the American Community Theatre Association, the CCTC competition allows companies 10 minutes to set up, 60 minutes to perform, and 10 minutes to strike. All set pieces, costumes, cast and crew must also be able to fit into a 10x10 foot square backstage. Disqualification awaits those who deviate from these rules!
The competitions are adjudicated by theatre professionals, either university professors or others who've taught and directed for years. After the show, the cast comes out to hear the adjudication, which is a response to what the adjudicator has seen. Adjudicators are not allowed to make comments based on their enjoyment of the show but, rather, on how well they think it was realized by the theatre company. Needless to say, with such a subjective process, and with artistic egos on the line, adjudication can be a bit rough at times. Overall, though, the process is aimed at helping community theatres improve themselves, with the ultimate goal being better theatre for the audiences.
Backstage Theatre took "Crazy Bag" to the 2007 CCTC competition. "Crazy Bag" is a new one-woman comedy
written and performed by Murphy Funkhouser.
Those who participated behind-the-scenes
include: Christopher Willard, director; Sandra Willis, deck technician; Barry Nowakowski, sound;
BJ Knapp and Pamela Evans, set painting and load-in. Backstage Theatre won 4 awards:
All State Acting - Murphy Funkhouser
All State Directing - Christopher Willard
All State Set Design - Backstage Theatre
Best Director - Christopher Willard
In Colorado, such competition has found the Backstage performing in Vail, Aspen, Steamboat, Longmont and Sterling. We've also hosted two festivals here in Summit County. After the 1996 festival, we took our show "J.B." on to the regional competition in Twin Falls, Idaho, where we won first place. From there, it was on to the national competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. There, we received an invitation to an international festival, and in the summer of 1998, we traveled to Thun, Switzerland, where we performed "The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)" in a 14th century castle. Most recently, we took Lanford Wilson's one-woman one-act "The Moonshot Tape" and walked away with several awards: Third Place Overall award, People's Choice award, Best Actress and All-State Certificate in Acting awards for Bonnie DeChant, and All-State Certificate in Directing award for Jeremy Cole.
Education - Classes & Workshops
Since inaugurating its training program in 1998, the Backstage Theatre has offered a variety of theatre classes and workshops, such as: acting, playwriting, stage lighting, stage combat, directing, scene study and others.
Past instructors have included talent such as Michael Grittner, Craig Sodaro, Jay Nelson, Tracy Shaffer Witherspoon, Geoff Kent, Tam Dalrymple Frye, Dane Torbenson, Gillian McNally, Alan Osborne, Luanne Nunes DeChar, just to name a few.
Backstage Theatre hopes to continue to offer occasional classes and workshops in order to bring professional training to local talent.
KidsPlay
KidsPlay began in the spring of 1994 with twenty-five 1st through 8th graders presenting Westward Ho! --
a comic version of the settling of the West. Artistic director Wendy Moore had seen the need for an
educational component to the Backstage Theatre program and enlisted middle school teacher Craig Sodaro
to create a young people's workshop.
With the help of his wife, Sue, Craig came up with a script, audition technique, and rehearsal schedule
suited to a wide range of students. The final product was such a success that word got around, and each
succeeding session of KidsPlay has been filled to capacity.
Our Fall 2007 KidsPlay workshop presented "The Adventures of Madeline". Our Mondays session was directed by
Monique Haverkorn with assistant Suzanne Bertram. Our Tuesdays session was directed by Kristen Costello with
assistant Tim West.
Through the many KidsPlay productions, young actors have been able to "tread the boards" of a real,
working theatre while having fun along the way. The KidsPlay motto might well have read, "Today the
Backstage, Tomorrow Broadway!"
Looking Back - Passing the Hat in 1974
Visitors to Breckenridge in the mid-70s had the chance to loudly boo and hiss our performances, as our main fare in those days was Melodrama: black-caped villains and white-hatted heroes; wicked saloon gals and innocent young beauties. Enjoying unexpected success in performing in a series of bars and restaurants around town, Allyn Mosher, Shirley Martin, and Dan Miner incorporated the Backstage Theatre in 1976, and built its first permanent, 74-seat theatre. Live theatre had come to the mountains to stay.
Looking Back - The Sterling Years 1976-1980
Our space in the Sterling Building, at the corner of Ski Hill Road and Main Street, had a home-made light board and a stage with 'barely enough room to fit a Volkswagen', according to John Ashton of Rocky Mountain News, who warmly reviewed our production of Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap". Nevertheless, we produced a year-round schedule of musicals, mysteries, and melodramas. Seeking to increase donated support, in 1976 the Backstage initiated the fundraising auction in Summit County. For 8 years, the annual Labor Day auction brought in a substantial portion of the Theatre's operating funds.
In 1977, we added a chamber music series conducted by Dr. Kenneth Evans, who later founded the Breckenridge Music Institute, and on Sunday nights we offered a classic film series.
In 1979, Joyce Mosher began a ten-year series of innovative children's theatre shows and workshops, which were awarded grants from the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities for 5 consecutive years.
From the beginning, the Backstage was envisioned as an artists' collective, with the actors and crew equally sharing a quarter of the box office receipts - the remainder going to meeting the costs of the production and the overhead of the theatre. As Denver theatre critic Alan Stern put it, "Community Theatre has rarely had it so good."
Looking Back - The Golden Decades 1980-2000
In 1980, Nick Marsch offered the Theatre space in his new Village at Breckenridge development. Grants from the Gates, El Pomar, and the Coors foundations, along with donations of money and services from hundreds of patrons, turned architect Jon Gunson's drawing into the comfortable and functional performance home that we enjoyed for twenty-one years.
Throughout the 1980s, the quality and professionalism of the theatre grew. The Denver Post ranked our 1983 production of A.R. Gurney's "The Dining Room" one of the 10 best productions in the Rocky Mountain region for that year, and praised the solo performances of Michael Wilson in the 1987 production of "Give 'em Hell, Harry", and Carol Tuchschmidt in "The Belle of Amherst".
In 1990, after 15 years as artistic directors, as well as principal director, costume designer, and set designers for nearly 30 productions, Joyce and Allyn Mosher invited Wendy and Bob Moore to assume the direction of the Backstage. During the Moores' nine-year tenure, the Backstage undertook and increased schedule in the number of productions and the number of performances. At the same time, Craig Sodaro renewed and expanded the Children's Theatre Program, building it into a popular training ground for Summit County's aspiring young actors.
In 1991, the Backstage entered its first production in the annual competition held by the Colorado Community Theatre Coalition. Since then, the Backstage has sent a show every year, consistently winning high honors.
In 1995, Wendy Moore created the Theatre's most successful outreach program, Backstage at the Riverwalk. This annual large cast musical draws a new audience and creates fresh enthusiasm for theatre in Summit County.
Looking Back - On the Move 2001-2002
Our 28th season was a mobile one - performing from Copper to Keystone, Dillon to Breckenridge - our casts and crews bravely took on the challenge of making theatre in any venue that would have us - and many did. Without the generosity of our hosts, we would have been silenced. A hearty round of applause to our hosts: Hunt-Placer Inn, Lake Dillon Theatre Company, Colorado Mountain College-The Speakeasy Theatre, Copper Mountain Resort, Town of Breckenridge-Town Hall, Father Dyer United Methodist Church, Town of Breckenridge-Recreation Center, Stage Door Cafe, Starbucks-Dillon, Breckenridge Mountain Lodge, Breckenridge Cattle and Fish Company, Ristorante Ti Amo, Keystone Neighbourhood Co.-Quaking Aspen Amphitheatre and the Park Lane Pavilion, Sherpa & Yeti's and the Summit County Arts Council-The Riverwalk Center.
With an enormous amount of help from the Town of Breckenridge and architect Matt Stais, we opened the new Breckenridge Theatre at 121 South Ridge Street on December 21, 2002, with our production of Coleen Hubbard's "Motherload". The playwright was in attendance and the show ran smoothly, inaugurating what we hope to be a long run in this charming new facility.
Looking BAck - A Backstage for the Backstage 2004
Our new dressing rooms addition was completed in the fall of 2004. The Backstage Theatre
would like to thank all those involved in helping make our dream into a reality, including:
Matt Stais Architects, Tony Harris Construction; Steve Little/Alpha Omega Electric; Jennifer
Cram, Town of Breckenridge Planning Department; Town of Breckenridge Planning Commission;
then-Mayor Sam Mamula; now-Mayor Ernie Blake; Breckenridge Town Council; the actors and
technicians who went without pay, and all those who gave of their time, money and resources.
THANK YOU!
Looking Ahead - The Tradition Continues
As we move into the 21st Century, the future looks bright for Backstage Theatre.
Our Children's Theatre program (which premiered in 2006 with "Hyronomous A. Frog: The Frog Prince"
and followed that up with an exciting new adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit") has proved
to be a huge success and will expand its seasonal offerings.
The New Voices Series has been established to introduce new writing, directing, and acting talent
to the American theatre stage.
Longer runs of hit shows, more varied programming, and new and innovative works are all in the offering.
Most importantly, our audiences continue to grow as they discover the level of quality found in each
of our productions. Our valued friends -- businesses, donors, sponsors, advertisers, casts, crews and
volunteers -- continue to contribute to Backstage Theatre in invaluable ways.
Thanks to all of you, the show will go on.
